Just go a few blocks off the main tourist trap roads to find authentic, reasonably priced Mexican food in a lovely open air restaurant.

To start they bring you a huge platter with five different salsas to accompany your meal-chips are not included, but you will want to order them.

sandia agua fresca

We ordered a watermelon agua fresca which was enormous and delicious. I had vegetarian fajitas-cactus, onion, peppers, and pineapple. The pineapple seemed out of place, but was delicious. My fajitas came with home made corn tortillas that were so soft and warm they nearly melt in your mouth. My husband chose the poblano/onion enchilada chilanga. It was basically a quesadilla folded in half, deep fried, and topped with lettuce and sour cream sauce. We also ordered a side of rice and beans. Both were good, but the beans didn’t taste vegetarian, so we did not eat them. All of our food was hot, delicious, and served up remarkably quickly.

Our only regret was not saving room for dessert. This was our favorite meal in San Jose thus far.
